Three Nigerian Universities to Participate in Shell's Second Eco-marathon 2015

Shell South Africa, in conjunction with the University of Johannesburg, will host the second Shell Eco-marathon in Africa on 3rd and 4th October at Zwartkops Raceway in Pretoria West, South Africa.

Shell Eco-marathon is a global Unique Competition which is currently held in four locations around the world (Asia, Americas, Europe and Africa) that challenges high school and university students to design, build, test and drive the most energy-efficient vehicle.

This initiative seeks to inspire young people around the world to develop new approaches and energy-efficient solutions to the future of mobility.

This year, 20 participating teams from different high schools and Universities in South Africa and within the African continent registered for the competition.

Also participating is three Nigerian Universities, sponsored by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Limited (SPDC). The participating include the students of University of Lagos, University of Benin and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, collectively known as Team Nigeria

The teams are classified under two vehicle categories, that is, Prototype and Urban Concept.

The Prototype category will be powered by battery electric or gasoline. The Urban Concept will be powered by gasoline or diesel.

The winning team will have designed a car that drives the equivalent of the longest distance using the least amount of energy in their chosen category. The goal is not to break speed records but to use as little energy as possible over a set distance.
